The historic Carnegie Hall was commissioned by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1891 and has been one of the world’s premier venues for classical music ever since. It boasts an Italian Renaissance design, which was courtesy of the genius architect William Burnet Tuthill. Though the New York Philharmonic moved to the Lincoln Center in 1962, leaving the Carnegie Hall without a resident company, the hall still puts on in excess of 200 shows each season.

Guests staying at our luxury hotel in Midtown, The MAve, should definitely take the opportunity to check out a show at Carnegie Hall if their schedule allows. It’s definitely one of the top cultural experiences in the city, if not the country, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for any classical music connoisseurs out there.

The types of shows planned for the upcoming 2013 season run the gamut from opera and classical music to pop and jazz. One of the highlights is the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which is an intercultural group composed of Israeli, Palestinian and Arab classically trained musicians. This season at Carnegie Hall the orchestra is performing a complete cycle of Beethoven’s nine symphonies.

In February keep a look out for a special performance by jazz singer Diane Reeves. This Grammy-winning singer is performing on February 16th in a show that is sure to thrill fans of the genre. Tickets can be purchased for as little as $15, with $50 able to buy a great seat in the dress circle or second tier.

While there is no official dress code at Carnegie Hall, take a hint from the other patrons and come dressed in smart attire. This means no jeans, no sneakers and no t-shirts.
