But that doesn’t mean all of the city’s artistic gems are concentrated in the hands of the Met, Guggenheim or Moma.

If guests of our boutique hotel The MAve in Midtown want to get a more complete picture of NYC’s art scene, they have to dig a little deeper than the museums and instead delve into the city’s galleries, studios and street art.

As no one could be expected to arrive to NYC and immediately have a handle on all the city’s art-world happenings, it’s a good thing that companies like Artigo Tours exist.

Artigo Tours is an art-loving tourist’s one-stop shop, as the company provides a host of tailor-made tours that take travelers on an exploration of the city’s famed and fantastic art scene.

Because Artigo Tours offers individualized tours, no group will leave disappointed. Interested in the creative process? Artigo can take your group into the active studios of working artists and even into their workspace homes. The company also arranges guided visits to some of the city’s top art schools like Cooper Union and the Pratt Institute where the next generation of great artists is currently being trained.

Tours vary in length anywhere from a short walking tour of a neighborhood to a multi-day expedition across the city’s art world. Other specializations of Artigo include architecture, street art and private collections, where tourists visit the residences of prominent art collectors to see their private collections of masterpieces.

For a free alternative to Artigo, check out the Tribeca Open Artist Studio Tour (TOAST). Organized by an artist-run non-profit, this annual art walk takes visitors into the studio space of hundreds of artists in over thirty buildings in NYC’s trendy TriBeCa neighborhood. This year TOAST runs from May 3rd to May 6th, so try not to miss it!

It’s official, starting on January 22nd it’s Broadway Week in NYC! This event runs until February 7th and offers visitors to the Big Apple the chance treat themselves to special 2-for-1 tickets to the city’s hottest Broadway shows.

Guests of our boutique hotel The MAve will be well suited to take advantage of this Broadway special as the NYC Theater District is only a few minutes away in Midtown Manhattan.

Popular shows on sale at the moment include Annie, Chicago, Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia!, and Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia! are perennial favorites with out-of-town visitors looking for traditional Broadway fare, while Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark is a little different from usual, as it’s a musical based on a comic book, and will likely appeal to contemporary theatergoers or families with teenagers.

Of course New York’s vibrant theater scene isn’t limited to only Broadway, as there is also an extensive array of Off-Broadway offerings elsewhere in the city. It’s fortuitous then that the city’s Off-Broadway Week begins on January 28th and runs until February 10th!

The Off-Broadway offerings are almost too many to go into much detail here, but suffice it to say that the shows often take more creative risks than their on-Broadway counterparts, as they don’t have as much pressure to be commercial successes. Often more affordable than Broadway shows, the Off-Broadway performances can vary a great deal in genre and visitors should be able to find a show that suits their tastes.

One popular Off-Broadway show is Perfect Crime, which is a suspenseful thriller—think CSI—that has been running continuously since 1987.

The NYC Restaurant Week officially kicked off on January 14th, but, in somewhat of a misnomer, the event extends all the way to February 8th this year. More than 300 restaurants in Manhattan are participating in the event by offering set meals at the set prices of $25 for lunch and $38 for dinner. It’s a unique opportunity to dine at some of the city’s best restaurants without breaking the bank.

Let’s go over a few dining options that guests at The MAve will be able to enjoy over the next few weeks.

The MarkJoseph Steakhouse at the South Street Seaport serves up some of the city’s best steaks in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Hospoda, on the Upper East Side, is a Czech restaurant that has been taking the city by storm. Eastern European cuisine has never been tastier as the restaurant combines Czech cuisine with fresh produce for a modern take on dishes like lentil soup and pork shank.

Esca in Midtown was founded by Chef Dave Pasternack who brought his family’s fishing past and Italian heritage to bear in this seafood restaurant. Raw fish make an appealing appetizer, while whole fish are the customary mains.

Brasserie Ruhlmann is a restaurant in the famed Rockefeller Center that offers French cuisine with an American twist. The NYC Restaurant Week special is a particularly good deal here, as a sandwich usually costs upwards of $20!

Finally, just across from The MAve boutique hotel in NYC’s Flatiron District is A Voce. This Italian restaurant is very highly regarded by the city’s food critics and its Restaurant Week special won’t disappoint.
